I came to illustration late in my career.  In the 1950's my Art School didn't offer illustration as a specialist area of study.  Neither was photography practised, nor did graphic design exist.  In its stead students studied commercial art.

Despite this conspicuous lack of provision, fresh and powerful image-making was appreciated and nurtured.  We studied composition, knew a lot about films and film making and in design for print married text with imagery.  Subsequently a lot of my studio based work in painting, printmaking and collage has been used as illustration.

As an exercise in vanity publishing I've enjoyed producing a personalised Christmas card for ten years.  All of these cards feature my immediate family and some of them also have been commissioned commercially.
